History:
The city of Dellys (in modern-day Boumerdès, Algeria) has been inhabited since ancient times. Remains from prehistory, as well as from Punic, Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine eras, have been found in the area. It is believed that the area was settled by the Moors in the 7th century A.D. Dellys was part of the Domain of the King of Titteri, and later its governor was loyal to the Husseinid dynasty. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the town became a center of free trade, and grew into an important port in the Mediterranean. It was also a major center of corsair activity. Under Ottoman rule, its importance declined and the port moved to Mers al-Kebir. Dellys was destroyed by an earthquake in 1716, after which the population moved to safer areas, such as nearby M’Sird. In the first half of the 19th century, the French began trying to conquer Algeria, and their attempts turned into a war which lasted until the 1860s. Dellys was taken by the French in 1871 and became part of French Algeria. The port was rebuilt and was eventually linked to Algiers by road. In 1962, Algeria won its independence from France, and Dellys was part of the new nation. After that, it grew into an important regional commercial center. Today, Dellys is a market town and a port, and has a museum which features artifacts from its long and diverse history. Visit one of the famous monuments of Algeria with your friends and family.
