History:

The National Museum of Antiquities in Algiers was officially established in 1955, although its roots can be traced back to a smaller museum created by Sultan Abdul Aziz in the 19th century. The original collections of the museum were composed primarily of archaeological materials which were discovered through Algerian excavations during the French occupation of Algeria in the 1930s. Since its establishment, the museum has expanded to include a large number of historic artifacts from across the country, as well as more recent works of fine art. Within the museum, visitors can explore sections dedicated to prehistoric life, the Roman period, a range of Arabic and Islamic cultural artifacts extending across seven different eras, ethnography, and fine art. Among the museum's most notable pieces are a fragment of the Kaaba's (the holiest site in Islam) Black Stone, a number of ancient mosaics, and a collection of ancient weapons from the Ottoman Empire and various Berber tribes.
