History:
The Tipasa Archaeological Park, located in the modern city of Tipasa in northern Algeria, dates back to ancient Roman times. The park was established by the French in the early 20th century and comprises several important archaeological sites including the ruins of ancient Roman cities as well as Punic cemeteries, villas and monuments. The earliest known settlement in what is now Tipasa was founded by the Phoenicians. Its name is derived from the word “topazot”, which means "collection of buildings". From the 3rd century BC until the 4th century AD, Tipasa was a major port city in the region and the center of the Kingdom of Mauritania Caesariensis. It became a major Roman colony under Emperor Augustus in 33 BC. During the Roman period, Tipasa was the chief residence of the proconsul of Mauretania Caesariensis. It was an important center of commerce as well as culture during the Roman period. The archaeological park is home to a number of important ruins from the Roman period, including the remains of baths, churches, temples and other important structures. It is also home to two Punic cemeteries dating back to the 4th century BC. Other important sites include the temple of Hercules, a necropolis and an amphitheatre. Tipasa has since its establishment been a significant cultural and archaeological site.
