History:

Ain Salah is an oasis town located in northern Algeria and is the capital of the Tamanrasset Province. In the past, it was a caravan stop between Berber area in the North West part of the Sahara desert and the oases in the South East. The first inhabitants of the area were semi-nomadic Tuareg people. During the 19th century, French forces arrived to the area and as a result, many captives were taken away from the area. In the 1930s, French troops attempted to extend the protection of Tamanrasset and the surrounding area as far as Timimoun in the Ahaggar mountains. The town became a bit more well known in the 1950s after it served as an important base in the war between France and the Algerian rebels. During this period, large military barracks were set up in the city. After Algeria gained independence in the early 1960s, the population of Ain Salah increased as people moved to the city seeking better job opportunities and access to basic amenities. In recent times, tourism has become a major industry in the area as it is situated near amazing geological formations such as the Ahaggar mountains. The town is also popular for it’s sandy desert landscape and quarters of Tuareg people. Visit one of the famous monuments of Algeria with your friends and family.
