History:
The Monument of the Martyrs (or Maqam El-Shahid in Arabic) is a memorial in Algiers, Algeria, dedicated to the memory of those who gave their lives for the independence of Algeria from France in 1954. It was built in 1962, by the then-President Houari Boumediene as a way to honor the memory of the Algerian people and the struggle for freedom. The Monument stands at the foot of the Casbah and overlooks the Bay of Algiers. The Monument stands 48; 16 meters high and is made from granite and concrete. It features an eternal flame on top that is lit once a year on November 1, the day of the “Martyrs and Revolution”. The flame symbolizes the ongoing struggle for Algerian independence and also honors those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom. Below the eternal flame, there are four other symbols of freedom: a wreath of laurel leaves, two coffins, a dove, and a blazing cross marking the site of the most fierce battles in the war for independence. It was constructed in 1982 to commemorate the 100,000 illiterate and poorly educated people, who fought in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962). 3. It stands at a height of 48 meters and is composed of two identical concrete obelisks, the higher symbolizing the Algerian struggle for freedom, the lower the sacrifice made. 4. At the base of the monument is a mosque featuring the most important date of the Algerian liberation, 1st November 1954. 5. The construction of the monument was inspired by the Victory Monument in Vietnam. 6. The architect of the Monument was Abdelkader Benachi and the sculptor was Yousoppo Ogata. 7. On July 5, 2012, a fire was started in the monument, sadly destroying the original time capsule which was put there on the day of opening in 1982. 8.
