El Gour is an ancient city located in the province of M’Sila in Algeria. Its name is derived from the Phoenician “El-Goura” meaning “God’s House”. El Gour was an important city during the ancient Roman Empire and was one of the few that was saved from destruction by the Vandals. It also acted as an important center for the Umayyad Caliphate, who made it a major trading hub. The city of El Gour was destroyed by an earthquake in 12th century and was later rebuilt in the 13th century. During the Ottoman Empire, El Gour was a major commercial center and contained several mosques, madrasas, and other public buildings.
