History:

The Zeraïa Dam is located on the upper Oued Zeraïa in the province of M'Sila in Algeria. It was built between 1951 and 1957 with the technical assistance of Soviet Spezstroy experts. It is a rock-filled embankment dam with a maximum height of 88 m (288 ft) from the foundations and a crest length of 513 m (1,690 ft). The volume of the dam and its 18 km (11 mi) long reservoir totals 1.3 million m³ (4 billion cubic ft). The dam is used for multiple purposes, including irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water supply. The construction of the dam was carried out as part of a larger irrigation project aiming to increase crop production in the M’Sila region. It has since been expanded multiple times, including in 1984 when a 35 km (22 mi) irrigation canal was added to the project. In 2015, an additional spillway was constructed to increase water storage capacity.
