History:
The current Elmoudjahid Stadium is located in Algiers, Algeria and is the home stadium for the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). It has a capacity of 80,000 and is one of the largest stadiums in Africa. The original stadium, located in the same place, was built in 1934 by the Spanish company Compañia Transatlantica and was inaugurated on 21 September 1934 by Sultan Moulay Youssef and governor of Algiers Aimery de Blêne. The original stadium was home to many international football matches and hosted the African Cup of Nations in 1980. In 1990 the stadium was renovated and expanded to its current capacity. It was renamed the "Elmoudjahid Stadium of Algiers” in 1996 to commemorate the anniversary of Algeria's independence from France (1962). It subsequently hosted several major international football tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup (1998), African Cup of Nations (1994), and the Mediterranean Games (1995). The Elmoudjahid Stadium has also hosted various other events, including concerts, sporting events, religious events, and even political rallies. In 2018, the stadium hosted the induction of the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika into the Algerian National Hall of Fame.
