History:

The Tissemsilt Dam is a multi-purpose dam located in the northwest of Tissemsilt Province in Algeria. Built between 1974 and 1980, the dam is intended to provide flood control, irrigate adjoining agricultural land and supply drinking water. The dam was built on the Mekerra River and has a total capacity of 6.3 million cubic metres of water, making it the fourth-largest reservoir in Algeria. The project was undertaken as part of the country’s third five-year plan (1977–1982) and involved the construction of an 84m high, 2.8km long embankment. This involved moving 3.3 million cubic metres of earth and installing an irrigation canal. The dam’s construction was a challenging operation that required some 23,000 tons of reinforcement steel and over 67,000 cubic metres of concrete to complete. The dam has since been used to control floods in the region, as well as providing irrigation water for the surrounding farmland. It has allowed the productivity of the area to increase more than threefold. In addition, a 17,000 metre pipeline from the dam to the city of Tissemsilt has provided drinking water for the area’s residents. The dam remains a vital resource for not only residents of Tissemsilt, but also for other nearby regions, supplying irrigation for 1,500 hectares of land and providing up to 30,000 cubic metres of water each day. It has helped to promote sustainable development throughout the region, ensuring the area’s continued economic growth. Visit one of the famous monuments of Algeria with your friends and family.
