History:

Ahaggar National Park is situated in the middle of the Sahara Desert in southern Algeria. It was established in 1954 to protect the unique environment of the region, which includes a variety of rare and endangered wildlife and plant species. The majority of the park is a flat plain of sandstone and granite, with rocky outcrops and occasional sand dunes along the borders. The park is home to notable wildlife species including Dorcas gazelle, aoudad, Barbary sheep, Barbary leopard and addax. The area is also renowned for its rich birdlife including the endangered Pharaoh eagle-owl. A variety of plants thrive in the region, including acacias, palms, tamarisk and dorcas gazelles. Early investigation of the area focused on uncovering Prehistoric and Roman settlements. Early explorers uncovered settlements along an ancient trade route between Tamanrasset and Assamaka in Niger.
