The archaeological site of Tiddis is located in the town of Tiddis, in Constantine Province, Algeria. It was originally discovered in 1971 by local inhabitants. However, it was not until 1992 that the French archaeologist Dominique Doctor conducted a series of excavations there. The site consists of two main areas: the highland and the lowland. The highland area includes the remains of a fortified city which dates back to the 1st century BC. These remains were identified as part of the Great Numidian Hilltowns which were a series of heavily fortifications cities built by the pre-Roman Numidian people who inhabited the region. This city is thought to have been the capital of the kingdom of Mauritania Caesariensis, a Roman province in Northern Africa. The lowland area includes several tombs and burial structures dating back to the Iron Age. These tombs are part of a necropolis located just outside of the city walls, and are believed to have belonged to people of high social or political status. The site was largely abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire. It was not until recent years that archaeologists have studied and explored the site further.
