History:

The Sidi M'Cid Bridge, commonly known as the Constantine Bridge, is a suspension bridge located in the city of Constantine, Algeria. It was constructed in approximately 1835 and spans the Rhummel gorge connecting Constantine to the hinterland. It is the only bridge in Algeria to have existing railcar tracks crossing it. Originally constructed by the French during their occupation of the country, the bridge was intended to connect two parts of Constantine that had been divided by the gorge. It was also designed to accommodate the rail line running through the city, making the bridge a key transportation link between the two sides of the city. The bridge is named after the leader of the local resistance against the Ottoman Empire, Sidi M'Cid. While occasionally damaged by storms or other acts of nature, the bridge has remained structurally sound. It stands as a reminder of both the French colonial occupation and the Algerian independence that followed, as well as the history of the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the region.
