History:
Oued Soummam is a town located in the Béjaïa province of Algeria. Oued Soummam, formerly called Fagus, is believed to have been founded in the 5th century BC. A number of evidence suggests that the Phoenicians and Romans were present in the region before the Arabs arrived in the region and established the current Tunisian city of Béjaïa. In the 8th century, the area was conquered by the Umayyad Caliphate, followed by the Almohad Caliphate. During this period, an important port was created at the mouth of the Oued Soummam river and the city rose to prominence due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea. In the 15th century, Oued Soummam was part of the Ottoman Empire, during which the city saw a period of development and prosperity. The port was home to several international traders, mainly from Italy, Portugal, and Spain, who would bring goods from Europe as well as from Africa. In 1830, with theFrench colonization of Algeria, the town was renamed Oued Soummam and incorporated into the French colonial administration.
