The square is named in memory of those who gave their lives during Algeria’s fight for independence against France. It is a symbol of the sacrifices made by the Algerian people, who struggled for eight long years to finally gain independence in 1962. The square was first built in the late 1800s when the French colonized Algiers. During this time, the place was known as Place du Gouvernement and was mainly used for administrative purposes. After the declaration of Algerian independence in 1962, the square was renamed in honor of the noble heroes who had died in the Algerian War of Independence, and the square was renamed Martyrs' Square. To commemorate the sacrifices of the Algerian people, the square was redesigned and a grand monument was erected in commemoration. The monument was designed by architect Mohammed Ameur Benyakhlef and depicts two wings of a dove on top of a prismatic column, and an eternal flame below. Inscribed in the bottom of the monument are the names of all those who lost their lives, and a quote by the Algerian leader, Houari Boumedienne: “Your names will remain eternal in the hearts of all free men”.
