The National Museum of Fine Arts of Algiers (MNAA) is a museum of art and antiquities located in theAlgiers neighborhood of El Madania, near Casbah. It was founded in 1922 during the French colonial period. Since then, the museum has gone through several changes. From 1922 to 1932, it was known as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de l’Algérie (MBA). During the Algerian War of Independence, it closed from 1962 to 1967. In 1973, the museum reopened as the Musée d’Art Moussa Sadissa de l’Algérie (MAMSA), with a focus on Algerian art, in order to correct historical omissions. Today, the MNAA is dedicated to both modern and contemporary art, as well as Algerian art forms like jewelry, ceramic art, and textiles. It exhibits a range of art from Algeria and the rest of North Africa, including work by renowned Tunisian artist Tahar Ben Jelloun. The museum also houses a large archive of photographs documenting modern Algerian history. It also contains a library, auditorium, and stores vital cultural documents such as manuscripts and archeological finds from Algeria and neighboring countries. In recent years, the MNAA has also focused on educational initiatives, hosting workshops and seminars for young students and adults alike. It annually exhibits the prizewinning art of Algerian students as part of the countrywide Salon National de Peinture Art de l’Algérie. The goal of these initiatives is to not only preserve Algeria’s fragile cultural heritage but also to foster the next generation of Algerian artists.
