Brief History:

Blida Mosque is situated in the city of Blida, which is located about thirty-five kilometers to the southwest of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. It was inaugurated in 1421 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed I (reigned 1421–1451). The building was constructed on the site of an old school and is considered to be amongst the oldest mosques in the country with a long history that goes back to the 14th century. It is a part of the Great Mosque of Blida which also includes a great courtyard and a large portal. The mosque has a sanctuary that is completely covered and spread over an area of 33 meters by 17 meters. It has a large central dome with low arched windows and four small domes around it, each having one arch with interlaced lobate circles inside it. In the middle of the four small domes, there is a small cupola which supports a pyramid shaped summit. The prayer hall of the mosque has three small aisles, with the mihrab located in the middle aisle on the qibla wall. Additionally, this mosque also features several decorative ornamentation and calligraphic inscriptions. The entrance of Blida Mosque is through an ornamental and imposing gateway, with two doors made of cedar wood. The walled courtyard has a large sahn (courtyard) with a fountain in the centre and smaller fountains on either side. The mosque is still actively used by the local community for daily prayers. In 1998, the authorities decided to rebuild the mosque, which had undergone several changes during its life; today, the mosque reflects its original design and is an attraction for many visitors. The visiting hours of Blida Mosque in Algeria vary depending on the season. During summer (May to September), the mosque is open from 9:30AM to 2:30PM and from 4:00PM to 8:00PM.
