History:

Tajbeg Palace, located in the Afghan capital of Kabul, is a former royal palace which served as the home of King Amanullah Khan and his family from the 1920s until 1973. The palace, which has been officially known as Arg-e-Shahi since 1982, was originally constructed in the 18th century and was probably used by the governors of the then city of Kabul. During the reign of King Amanullah Khan (1919-1929) the palace was enlarged and converted into a modern palace. The palace grounds were extended to cover approximately 42 hectares and the interior was decorated with tile walls, ornate carvings and statues in the Afghan, Indian and Ottoman styles. The palace featured living quarters, a harem, offices, courtyards and gardens. Many of the original decorations, including a large chandelier in the main hall, wooden ceilings, and stone floors still remain today. In the 1970s, during the government of President Daoud Khan, Tajbeg Palace served as the presidential palace and housed ministerial offices. After the Soviet invasion in 1979, it was taken over by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan and its occupants were expelled. In the following years, the palace was damaged through neglect and fighting during the civil war. In 2002, it was taken over by the Taliban and used as a training facility. After the fall of the Taliban in late 2001, it was returned to its original purpose as a palace. Today, the palace is used mainly as a government office for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the occasional artist and cultural events held within its walls.
