History:

The Balkh Museum is located in the city of Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan and is devoted to preserving the archaeological finds retrieved from the ancient city of Balkh. In 1972 the museum underwent a major expansion, and was officially registered as the National Balkh Museum of Afghanistan. The museum was also renovated extensively during this time to improve the displays and storage of its artifacts. In 2007, the museum underwent another renovation, adding a third wing dedicated to preserving the cuisines, traditions, costumes and lifestyles of Afghan ethnic groups. This section of the museum is currently the main attraction for travelers, and it contains an impressive collection of historical documents, photographs, audio-visual presentations, and other artifacts. The museum also made history in 2009, when it hosted the first international exhibition of ancient Buddhist artwork ever held in the country.
