History:

Paghman Hill is a hill in the Kabul region of Afghanistan that has been important in the history of the region. Its peak is located in Char-e-Sar-e-Pul village and it is located about 24 km away from Kabul. The history of the hill dates back to the 4th century BC when the area was home to the Achaemenid Empire. Achaemenid kings built a palace here, called the Paghman Palace. Later in the 3rd century BC the region came under the rule of the Greco-Bactrian kingdom. In the 5th century AD, the area was a haven for Buddhists and several monasteries were established in and near the hill. In the 17th century, Paghman Hill was the site of the Battle of Paghman Hill, between Sher Ali Khan of the Bala Hissar and Sultan Ali Khan of Herat. The battle ended in favor of Sher Ali Khan and he became the ruler of Kabul. In the 19th century, Paghman Hill became a summer residence for Amir Habibullah Khan who was the ruler of Afghanistan at the time. He built a summer palace here. Later, King Amanullah Khan moved the Afghan royal residence to Paghman Hill, until he moved it back to Kabul in 1919. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s, Paghman Hill was used as an observation post by Soviet troops as they occupied the city of Kabul. With the fall of the Soviet occupation in 1992, Paghman Hill became a site of violence and destruction. Today, Paghman Hill is a major tourist destination in the Kabul region of Afghanistan.
