1. Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburg Cathedral is located in the heart of Old Salzburg and it is the stunning Baroque cathedral too.  The current structure was built in the 17th century following a fire. The first church on this site was founded in 774 and dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Vergilius. This most famous religious monument in Salzburg is located on Cathedral Square (Domplatz).  Residenzplatz (Square) is located on its north side. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized in Salzburg Cathedral on January 28, 1756. In 1598, the original Roman church was severely damaged and forced to be demolished and rebuilt into a Baroque building. The foundation was laid in 1614 and completed in 1628, It’s 466 feet long and 109 feet high. The church is located in Mozart Square, not far from the entrance of Salzburg Castle, basically within walking distance can reach several scenic spots. The interior of the church is estimated to take half an hour to an hour to visit, but the interior design is really beautiful and spectacular, so it’s worth the trip.

2. Salzburg Congress Centre

Salzburg Austria is a popular venue for congresses, meetings, seminars and other events. The Salzburg Congress hosts the events at its 15,000 square meter convention centre located near the city centre. The convention facility can accommodate up to 2,500 visitors at a time. The national monument of Salzburg is located on Mirabell Park Gardens on the east side of the Salzach River. St. Michael’s is the oldest parish church in Salzburg’s “Old Town”.  It was the palace chapel and parish church until the 12th century. There has been a church on this site as far back as 800 AD.  It is called “St. Michaelskirche” in German. Visitors can enjoy a painting of the Archangel Michael conquering Lucifer.  This most popular monument in Salzburg is located on the principal altar. St. Michael’s Church is located between Residenz Square and Waagplatz. This church has an imposing presence in this small village. 4. St. Peter’s Abbey

St. Peter’s Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Salzburg Austria.  It is called “Stift Sankt Peter” in German. The abbey was established in 696 and is one of the oldest such facilities in this area of the world.  The building is home to the oldest library in Austria. The Romanesque abbey church was constructed starting around 1130.  This important monument in Salzburg was dedicated to St. Peter in 1147. On the northern foot of Monchsberg Hill, St. Peter’s Abbey is located in the Altstadt district of Salzburg. It is A very old church in Salzburg but not as grand as the Salzburg Cathedral, but there is a restaurant, souvenir shop and cemetery that you can visit too. 5. Hohensalzburg Castle

Perched upon Festungsberg Hill in Salzburg Austria, Hohensalzburg Fortress is the massive castle. The medieval fortress is one of the largest in Europe and the visitors to Salzburg can either hike up Festungsberg Hill to the fortress or take a relaxing ride up on the funicular. From the castle, one can enjoy spectacular views of Salzburg, the meandering Salzach River and the Austrian Alps. 6. Franciscan Church

By its slender Gothic tower and steep-sloped roof, the Franciscan Church in Salzburg Austria can be easily recognized.  Known as the “Franziskanerkirche” in German, it is one of the oldest churches in the city and the church was built between 1408 and 1450. As the name suggests, this religious monument in Salzburg belongs to the Franciscan Order of the Catholic church. Among its many attractions are nine chapels and a Gothic vault. In the Altstadt district of Vienna, the Franciscan Church is located near Cathedral Square (Domplatz). Entry is free but you can leave a small donation. The taking of photos is permitted and this tall church is older than the cathedral. Much of the architecture is Romanesque (e.g. doors and nave) with a bit of Gothic (ceiling) mixed with Baroque (the stunning ornate marble and gold high altar). The side chapels behind iron gates are decorated with lovely frescoes. Check out the carving of a lion on the pulpit stairs.

7. Makartsteg Bridge

Cross the Salzach River in Salzburg Austria, Makartsteg Bridge is one of several attractive bridges.  The current bridge was built in 2001 and because of the thousands of locks that have been attached to this old monument in Salzburg by both young and not-so-young lovers, Makartsteg Bridge is often called “Love Lock Bridge”. It is not that unusual to find love locks on footbridges in Europe but the volume of locks on this particular bridge is impressive! It has been a century-old tradition for lovers to inscribe a lock with their initials and attach it to the bridge.  They then toss the key into the river to symbolize their unending love. Are you planning a visit to Salzburg with your lover?  If so, don’t forget to bring along your inscribed love lock! In terms of history or architecture, the bridge itself is not really that unique but the view from the bridge is breathtaking. 8. Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace is a massive building located on the north shore of the Salzach River in Salzburg Austria. It is called “Schloss Mirabell” in German. This beautiful monument in Salzburg was constructed in the early 1600s for the Prince-Archbishop at the time.  It was rebuilt a century later in a Baroque style. Mirabell Palace in the venue for the Salzburg Palace Concerts and the formal garden that surrounds the palace is called Mirabell Gardens. The palace is mostly used as a government building, but it does hold concerts as well. Most of the palace is off-limits, however, there are areas of the palace that you can walk through. The palace is quite exquisite with its marble and sculptures. When we went, there was a small shaded area just before the entrance of the gardens to get a snack and/or drink. Mirabell Palace and Gardens are a must-visit while in Salzburg. It doesn’t cost anything to walk the grounds or the palace because it’s free.

9. New Residenz

The New Residenz is a beautiful white palace located on Residence Square (Residenzplatz) in Salzburg Austria.  This historical monument in Salzburg was built in the late 1500s and the tower at the front of the building was added later, along with its famous carillon, the “Glockenspiel”. Visitors to Salzburg can climb the stairs to the top of the tower and enjoy a great view of the city. The New Residenz is situated across Residenzplatz (square) from the original Residenz palace.  At the centre of that square is a beautiful fountain. Nowadays, the Residenz is still an important building complex in Salzburg. For example, the Tuscany Wing is part of the university’s law faculty. Receptions, conferences and congresses also take place in the palace, e.g. in the Carabinierisaal. With outstanding acoustics, several rooms can serve as concert venues. The Residenz has been part of the DomQuartier since 2014 and can be visited and explored on a unique museum tour.

10. Nonnberg Abbey

The oldest nunnery in Austria known as the Nonnberg Abbey, it is a Benedictine monastery located in Salzburg.  Although it is a little difficult to find, it is just a short walk from Mozart Square, the abbey is hidden at the foot of Festungsberg Hill. Nonnberg Abbey and Convent became home to a young postulant by the named Maria Augusta Kutschera (later Maria von Trapp) in 1924 and Maria’s story became the topic of the Broadway musical entitled “The Sound of Music” in 1959. Her story was made into a popular film in 1965. A number of scenes from the motion picture were filmed at this ancient monument in Salzburg. Abbey is connected with Hohensalzburg Fortress by one of the oldest extant funicular railways. If you don’t wanna use it in order to get there from Fortress, you can always walk down along Festungsgasse and enjoy some nice views of the old town along the way. Visiting nunnery is entry free. If you wanna walk there from the old town, the easiest way is to find Kapitelplatz, and from there go uphill along Festungsgasse and then turn left, next to St. George Shrine, where the street is branching up.

11. Residenz Palace

The Residenz is a stately mansion in Salzburg Austria.  It was constructed in the beginning of 1588 and was home to the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. The Residenz is located on Residenzplatz in the Altstadt district.  It is kitty-corner to the Salzburg Cathedral (Salzburger Dom). This important monument in Salzburg is sometimes referred to as the “Alta Residenz” (Old Residenz) to clearly distinguish it from the New Residenz, which is located on the opposite side of the Residenzplatz. The state rooms are large and very interesting, but the audio guide was very slow and boring. If you’re in Salzburg for the day, I suggest skipping this one.
