Tourism is one of the major sources of income in Ladakh. In fact, many locals are now taking advantage of this industry. However, tourism can have negative effects on the environment. One way to improve tourism while maintaining the local culture and nature is to open up new reserves that protect these areas from being overdeveloped.

After being concerned about tourism, recently a Dark Sky Reserve was opened in Ladakh. This reserve is opened in Hanle Village to promote Astro tourism. Hanle in Ladakh is a bloodless barren region far from any human disturbance and highly favorable natural vistas.  This area is known for its high altitude and low humidity, which makes it ideal for stargazing.

As we all know that Astro tourism in India is booming swiftly in present times. Hence it is the best time to open this sky reserve in Ladakh. Also, we all have probably heard of Big Dipper, Ursa Major, Orion, or Saptarishi in our science books and this Dark Sky Reserve will allow tourists to witness them all with naked eyes.

Since the stars are often used to guide travelers through the night sky, Many cultures around the world consider astronomy to be sacred. They believe that certain locations are special to the spirits of those who live near them.

A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bengaluru, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Ladakh Administration before inaugurating this reserve in Ladakh.

Hanle is the appropriate place to open this reserve because from here visitors will have a clear view of the sky. Obviously, Hanle is located in the cold desert region in Ladakh far away from any human disturbance hence you will get to see nature at its best at this place. Also, the sky at Hanle remains clear throughout the year which makes it an ideal place for all astronomical observations.
