3. The Cathedral of Beira & Ruins of the Fort in SofalaÂ
A magnificent piece of architectural design having used stones from the ruins of a fort in Sofala (Fort San Gaetano) to build the cathedral itself. Fort San Gaetano was erected right back in the early 16th century (1501) and apparently it was the very first European built structure in the whole of southern Africa. 7. Chirrunduo Dam (Limpopo Dam Wall)
Take a drive 26km North to Chirrunduo, you will cross a dam bridge which not only a dam but also one of the famous monuments in Mozambique. The wall of the dam regulates the water of the well known Limpopo River. Visitors exiting their vehicles must exercise caution as there are hippos that inhabit these waters. Farmers have built irrigation canals from off the Limpopo river which helps irrigate their crops whilst locals traditionally fish near the dam wall from off their boats.Â

8. Maputo Central Railway Station
It might seem an odd choice to visit a railway station on your âmust-seeâ list but the Central Railway Station is no ordinary station. About 4km North East of Chimoio is a popular rock formation/mountain called Mount Bengo. Locals from Chimoio have nicknamed the mountain Cabeça do Velho (âFace of the Old Manâ) because if you view Mount Bengo from Chimoio, the mountain portrays a side profile of an old mans face. A combination of shadows and rock protrusions in certain areas, shows a chin, mouth, nose, eye, and forehead, hence the nickname âFace of the Old Manâ that was given. this popular monument in Mozambique is approximately 850m long and 550m wide.

10. Mesquita da Baixa
This is the largest and oldest Mosque in Maputo and is a fabulous example of Portuguese and Arabic architectural design with its geometric, stone shapes on the facade standing out in pride. Situated in the old part of town, it was built at the end of the 19th-century and the mosque and its 6 minarets have been recently restored. The beautiful monument in Mozambique, now more than 100 years old, also houses a great little cafe where you can sit and admire the surroundings.

13. The Cahora Bassa DamÂ
The Cahora Bassa Dam is fed by the iconic Zambezi River and is the 2nd largest hydroelectric dam in Africa and the 5th largest dam in the world! Its capacity is 52,000,000,000, thatâs fifty-two thousand million cubic meters of water. The dam started filling in late 1974 and by early 1978 was almost full to capacity, flooding an area of 2,730 square kilometers with an approximate length of 290km, the width of 40km, an average depth of 31 meters and maximum of 157 meters.
