Osaka Castle History

Osaka Castle was first built between 1583 and 1585 by Commander Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who then ruled over Japan. During Hideyoshi’s life, the castle was constantly expanded and developed, and the city of Osaka became an important center of commerce and politics. Much of the castle was destroyed in the wars of the early 17th century, rebuilt in 1620, and then lost again due to a fire caused by a lightning strike in 1665.

Namba is a great base for visiting Osaka, less than 5 km from Osaka Castle. If the weather is good and you feel good, you can choose to walk as you only see the altitude when you are approaching the castle (which you have to walk up anyway, unfortunately) and the road is probably approx. it will take you an hour. Alternatively, you can take the subway from JR Namba to Osaka Castle.

If you only plan to spend a short time in Osaka, you may want to visit the two most popular attractions in one day; Osaka Castle and Umeda Sky Building. Whether you want to travel from Osaka Castle to the Umeda Sky Building or the Umeda Sky Building and Osaka Castle, the route is the same (vice versa). In this case, the best station to or from Osaka Castle will be Morinomiya Station, which is approx. It is a 1.4 km walk through the castle park to the castle. This station connects to the JR Osaka Loop Line, from where you can get to Osaka Station, which is about 900 meters from the entrance to the Umeda Sky Building.

Whether you plan to travel from Osaka Castle to Dotonbor or from Dotonbori to Osaka Castle, the route is the same (vice versa). Personally, however, we have found that Dotonborit is best experienced at night, so we really recommend that you visit Osaka Castle afterward. Osaka Castle is about 4.3 km from Dotonbori. If you feel like it, you can walk the route – even if you take the metro for approx. 1.2 km walk through the garden is necessary to get to the top of the castle and approx. It lasts for an hour. Alternatively, if you are looking for public transportation, you should head from Osaka Castle to Morinomiya Station.
