History:

The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV) is situated on the southern bank of the Yarra River in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and is a heritage-listed botanic Gardens established in 1846. Originally known as the "Botanic Gardens of Port Phillip", the garden was established to provide resources for the teaching of botany at the Melbourne University, and to identify and cultivate local and imported plants. Early History (1846-1877) In 1846, a 99-hectare site known as "Government Domain" was acquired by the government of Victoria, with the intention of establishing a botanic garden. Governor Charles La Trobe appointed William Whetham, aka "Botanist W.B. Whetham", the first director of the Botanic Gardens of Port Phillip in 1846. The Gardens were established with the primary purpose of aiding the teaching of botany at the University of Melbourne, and for identifying and cultivating local and imported plants. Initially, the Gardens were planted with trees and shrubs as well as a variety of plants from around the world. Between 1848 and 1860, the Gardens were actively managed, with the collection of plants expanded and several permanent buildings established, including the Government House and an orangery. The policy and design of the gardens began to develop into a rationally arranged botanical layout with ornamental features, indicative of the English parkland landscape style. In 1877, the Gardens were officially transferred from the University of Melbourne to the State of Victoria. The following year, the name of the Gardens was changed to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria, in recognition of the visit to Melbourne by the Prince and Princess of Wales. Modern Era (1878-present) The Royal Botanic Gardens of Victoria were reorganized and redesigned during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the influence of German-born Ferdinand von Mueller appointed as Government Botanist and Director in 1873. Mueller's botanical studies and design laid the foundation for the international reputation of the gardens. In 1953, planting began for theNational Herbarium of Victoria, which now houses more than 3 million specimens of native and exotic plants. During its more than 170 years, the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has established a reputation as one of the world's leading botanical gardens, internationally renowned for its scientific collections, horticultural displays and plant conservation.
