Sovereign Hill is located in Ballarat, a city in the state of Victoria, Australia. The site opened in 1970 and is an open-air museum and historical area that replicates a gold mining town during the 1850s Victorian gold rush in Australia. The area contains a collection of colonial-era buildings, historic streets, costumed actors as well as a range of gold mining activities related to the period. The site also has a museum, an orienteering course, guided sound and light show and subterranean street theatre. Sovereign Hill was the brainchild of local businessman and Ballarat historian, Peter Severin, who founded the Ballarat Old Colonists’ Association in 1961. He was inspired by the open air museum concept established in Europe and in 1966, he purchased 4.3 hectares (10.6 acres) of land that once acted as the gold mining area and proclaimed Sovereign Hill as a modern day reminder of the gold rush era. Construction of the site started in 1967 and was funded by both the Victorian government and private donations. When Sovereign Hill was officially opened in 1970, it attracted 88,000 visitors in its first year. Since then, it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Victoria with over 700,000 visitors each year. Today, Sovereign Hill is considered a place of national importance. It has been listed on the Register of the National Estate since 1978 and is a Historic Reserve. Various buildings at Sovereign Hill have also been listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
