The Museo Nacional de Peru (National Museum of Peru) in Lima is a history museum located in the historical center of Lima. It was established in 1822 by President José de San Martín and is the longest-standing museum in the city. It houses an impressive collection of archaeological, ethnographic, and artistic pieces from pre-Columbian times to the present day. The museum has been through three major stages of development. The first stage lasted from 1822 to 1884. During this time, the museum had, initially, been open to the public open on Thursdays and Sundays. The collections were expanded with new material arriving from Peru, such as the Valle de los Reales and others, and the musuem was open to visitors five days a week. In 1934, it moved to its current location, a 19th century palace in the center of Lima. The museum saw many renovations during its third development period (1962-present). By 1973, the building underwent extensive structural renovations and it closed its doors for over a decade. It was reopened in 1984 with a brand new permanent collection dedicated to pre-Columbian artifacts from across Peru. This collection later expanded to include the world famous Gold and Silver Museum and the City of Kings exhibit in 1992.
