The Great Wall of China is an ancient fortification in the region of northern China, running a total length of around 5,500 miles. It is generally regarded as one of the greatest ancient engineering feats of all time, and its construction began as far back as the seventh century BC. Although the wall has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over its long history, the most well-known sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). The earliest wall that would eventually become the Great Wall of China was constructed in the seventh century BC during the reign of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. At the time, it was made of earth and stones and ran roughly a few hundred miles long along the northern part of China. With the fall of the Qin Dynasty and the rise of the Han Dynasty, the wall evolved with additional construction. During the Han Dynasty, it was made of stones and bricks, and its route was expanded to over 4,000 miles or ten times the length of the earlier Qin wall. This may have helped to fend off the Mongolian invasions, which took place during the Han Dynasty. By the time of the Ming Dynasty, in the late fourteenth century, the wall had gone through extensive construction and reached 5,500 miles in length. In addition to its sheer length, most of the surviving sections from the Ming period feature steep grades and can reach as high as 28 feet in height in places. During the Ming era, the wall was also equipped with numerous forts, guard towers, and beacon towers which could be used to give warning signals in the event of a threat. The Ming wall was eventually destroyed during the Qing Dynasty as new fortifications were built to protect the empire. The majority of the Great Wall that we can see today is from the Ming era, although much of it has been damaged over the years due to wars, natural disasters, and human activity.
