History:
Chan Chan is an archaeological site located in the desert plain of coastal Trujillo, in the present-day La Libertad Region of Peru. It is believed to have been the largest pre-Columbian city in South America with an estimated population of around 35,000 people at its peak. It was the capital of the Chimú people, and part of an extensive zone of political control that included present-day Ecuador and Peru. The city was constructed over the course of several centuries starting around 800 AD and was abandoned in the 15th century due to ecological stress and the collapse of trade networks. It shows the development of a highly specialized and stratified society in a challenging environment. Chan Chan is notable for its large adobe mud-brick structures, which are divided into ten citadels or "palaces". These structures are the best preserved examples of Chimú culture and technology, and many of them contain unique artwork depicting daily life in the city. A number of excavations have been conducted since the 19th century, and in 1986 the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
