History:
Yinchuan Sand Lake is located in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China. It is a desert oasis situated in the heart of the Gobi Desert and is located within Yinchuan city. The lake is thought to have been formed by an earthquake approximately one thousand years ago. This left the area full of sand and gravel which eventually formed the Yinchuan Sand Lake. During the Tang Dynasty, the lake became an important stop along the Silk Road trade route and eventually became a popular destination for people looking to enjoy the beauty of the desert. In 1961, the lake was once again in the limelight when the Chinese National Geography Team explored the lake and discovered an ancient city beneath the sands. This discovery soon sparked an archaeological excavation of the lake and surrounding area, which revealed a number of vestiges of human habitation. Artifacts, pottery, coins, and stoneware have been found at the lake, dating back to the 5th to 6th centuries. Today, the Yinchuan Sand Lake is a popular tourist destination due to its range of terrain, including sand dunes, salt flats, and petrified wood. Visitors can also explore the many ruins found in the vicinity and enjoy the spectacular sunsets of the desert.
