History:

The Tretyakov Brothers, Pavel and Sergei, began their art collection in the mid-19th century, assigning the task of obtaining Russian works to the art critic, Alexander Ivanov. The collection grew to immense proportions, and in 1892, the brothers made a deal to establish Pavel's collection at the State Tretyakov Gallery with the city of Moscow in exchange for financial aid for accomplishing the task of promoting Russian art. The State Tretyakov Gallery was officially established in 1892 and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017. It currently serves as the home to over 172,000 works of art. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
