The Tula Kremlin was constructed between 1620 and 1630, under the direction of Prince Ivan Borisovich Khovansky and Prince Dmitriy Khovansky. Before then, the site was occupied by a wooden stronghold of the city's Tula merchants' guild. Differing from other ancient Russian kremlins, this fortress was built directly onto a hill of limestone, as opposed to being built atop a man-made earthen embankment. Following its construction, the kremlin was used as a stop-off point for various Russian Tsars and other important dignitaries passing through Tula.
