The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, located in the city of Chicago, Illinois, is an English Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral. Completed in 1922, it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and the principal church of the archdiocese. The cathedral has a large, traditional organ and a particularly magnificent stained-glass window depicting the archangel Michael defeating 12 enemies of the Church with a flaming sword. History The earliest plans to establish a cathedral for the Archdiocese of Chicago date back to 1846—soon after the city's incorporation—but the building of the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel did not begin until 1916. The corner stone was laid in 1916, but construction was delayed due to World War I. Finally, the church was completed in 1922, making it one of the tallest churches in the country at the time. The cathedral was dedicated in a special ceremony a year later on May 20, 1923. Facts St. Michael is the patron saint of Chicago and honor of this, the church is dedicated to him. The exterior of the Cathedral features a Gothic Revival-style with soaring 120-foot tall buttresses and soaring 176-foot tall twin spires. The architecture is polychromatic due to the combination of materials used to build it such as two tones of Bedford limestone, granite and terra cotta. The 12 lancet windows facing south represent 12 enemies of the church that St. Michael had assisted in defeating.
