The St. Petersburg Mosque is a symbol of the re-birth of Islam in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s and stands on the grounds of the former Jewish Hospital at Lakhta Centre, near the Neva River. Planning and construction of the mosque began in 2003 and the building was officially opened in 2013 by President Vladimir Putin and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
