Founded in 1945, it is the largest and oldest of the Buddhist monasteries in Russia and is home to the Kalachakra temple, which is the only one of its kind in the country. The construction of the Ivolginsky Datsan began in 1945 with the blessing from the 14th Dalai Lama, Tubten Gyatso. Since then, the site has attracted high-ranking religious figures, including the Shamarpa (Red Hat) of the Karma Kagyu line of Buddhism, as well as monks from all over the world. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
