History:

, the Volgograd Memorial Complex is one of the most important monuments to the nation’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The Memorial Complex is composed of a complex of structures in the city of Volgograd, which was formerly known as Stalingrad. The first monument at the Memorial Complex was called the Mamayev Kurgan and it was constructed in May of 1967 in honor of those who lost their lives during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943. The battle at Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest in modern history and resulted in the near-total destruction of the city. The Mamayev Kurgan rises more than 85 meters high and is crowned with a seven-meter-tall statue of a mother and her children looking towards the sky. In 1985, the broad boulevard of Stalingrad was extended past the Mamayev Kurgan and divided into two parts, with the eastern side devoted to the Memorial Complex called Alley of Heroes. This area contains a series of monuments for the defenders of Stalingrad including dozens of busts of the defenders, an avenue of flags, and an obelisk. The western side is the Boulevard of Eternal Glory which pays tribune to the fallen soldiers. Along this boulevard are several larger monuments, including the Monument to the Defenders of Stalingrad, which is a four-meter-tall statue of a Soviet soldier with a bayonet, and The Motherland Calls, a unique 87-meter-tall statue of a woman holding a sword and shield. Today the Memorial Complex is considered one of the most symbolic museums in Russia and a national tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during World War II.
