Overview:

Van Castle is located in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is a Norman Castle, built around the 13th century by the Norman family of 'Van' in Irish, who were an ancient Anglo-Norman family. The castle is an impressive structure, and was strategically positioned in order to command the bridge over the river Nore that ran through the town of Thomastown. From the front it looks like an impressive doorway, complete with guard flanking the two towers set back from the entrance. There is a square inside with high walls and several turrets in which musket loops are located to provide defence. The castle is now open to the public, and has an array of gardens with trees dating back to the 17th century. The moat was later filled in, but the ditch it formed still exists today as a feature in the landscape. 5.Unique Gatehouse:The gatehouse of Van Castle is built from blocks of sandstone, with a single, carved stone arch above the entrance. Van Castle is a 15th-century castle located in Van, County Louth, Ireland. The castle was built in the late 15th century by Cormac Mc Ardle O’Neill, Chief of the clan of the O’Neill Hall, on top of a hill above the village. It was once one of the largest fortified castles in the region. The castle was an important stronghold of the O’Neill’s during the 15th and 16th century, and was attacked numerous times by the English during their attempts to take control of Ulster. The castle was almost completely destroyed in 1650 during the Irish Confederate Wars, when it was attacked and burned by a large troop of Oliver Cromwell’s army. The O'Neill's abandoned the castle and it was left in ruins for the next two centuries. In 1820, the castle ruins were purchased by Sir Henry Brown-Taylor and in 1947, the castle was declared a National Monument.
