History:

The Roquefixade Castle is a 10th century medieval castle located in County Donegal, Ireland. The first castle at the site was built in the 10th century by the O'Doherty clan, who had settled in the area in the 9th century. The original castle was destroyed in 1164. In 1196, the castle was rebuilt by Hugh de Lacy, the first Earl of Ulster, and in 1207 was granted to Hugh O'Doherty. The castle was the main stronghold of the O'Dohertys for around three hundred years. It was besieged multiple times from the 13th to the 16th centuries, including by the English forces of Queen Elizabeth I in 1595. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was fortified several times, including with cannons and gun platforms. In 1607, after the Flight of the Earls, the O'Dohertys lost control of the castle and it was taken over by the English. In 1609, the castle was burned by the Irish forces of Hugh Roe O'Donnell, and it lay in ruins until 1839, when the last of the O'Dohertys, Seán Óg, gifted the ruins to the French scholar and historian Paul de Vallellau, who paid for its restoration.
