History:

Tsaritsyno Palace is a historical landmark located in Moscow, Russia. The original Tsaritsyno Palace, consisting of a two story structure, was designed by the Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and was constructed between 1776 and 1780, under the orders of Empress Catherine the Great. The palace was originally intended to be a summer residence for the imperial family, however its plans were ultimately never completed and the interior was never furnished. In 1875, Tsar Alexander II purchased the palace and commissioned its restoration and repair, with the goal of making it a royal residence. The main building was converted into a grand palace and several outbuildings were added, including gentleman’s quarters, a ballroom, a guardhouse, a theater, stables, and two large parks. During World War II, Tsaritsyno Palace was occupied by the Germans and suffered severe damage, including the destruction of much of the interior. Following the war, the palace was used by various public organizations, including the Lenin Library and a Soviet military construction institute. In 1991, Tsaritsyno Palace was listed as an architectural and historical landmark. In 2004, a large-scale restoration project was initiated by the Moscow City Government, and in 2006, the palace re-opened as Tsaritsyno Museum Preserve with a museum dedicated to Russian History. Today, the palace is a popular tourist destination, with visitors able to explore its 42 hectares of greenery and gardens, a 10 hectare lake, and more than 100 historic buildings.
