History:

Shirakami-Sanchi (白神山地) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located within the northern part of Aomori Prefecture in Japan.The area consists of three mountain ranges and covers about 1,300 square kilometres (500 square miles), making it the largest and one of the oldest beech forests in Asia. The area was designated as a Natural Monument in 1934 and added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1993. The history of Shirakami-Sanchi begins during the Jōmon period (14000-3000 BC). During this time, human activity was limited in the area due to its steep and rugged terrain. Plants and animals that were indigenous to the area eventually took root and flourished thanks to its unique environment. In the Edo period (1603-1868 AD), it is believed that samurai warriors, known as the Shirakami-Sanchi Bushi, traveled through the forests hunting wild boar and deer. The dense forests had a great impact on the local culture and were referred to as the “mysterious forests of Shirakami-Sanchi.” During the Meiji period (1868-1912 AD), the Japanese government began logging operations in the forests as part of an effort to modernize the country. Logging continued until the 1940s, when the forests were designated as a national park. In 1993, the area was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its unique ecology and for the long history of human interaction with the forests. Since then, the Shirakami-Sanchi has become a popular tourist destination, allowing visitors to experience the lush forests and unique wildlife. It is also home to a number of endangered species of plants, including the Fagus crenata (Kurome-Fagus) and the Japanese larch (Irigo-Yatsugi).
