The tomb of Akhenaten is located in the Royal Wadi in Amarna, Egypt. It is the only surviving tomb of its kind as all other tombs from Amarna have been destroyed over the years. Built at the time of Pharaoh Akhenaten, the tomb was originally known as the Talatat Tomb. This tomb was discovered and excavated in 1892 by British archaeologists led by William Flinders Petrie. The tomb is located within a honeycomb of small underground chambers, which are believed to have been the burial sites for Akhenaten and his extended family. The central chamber of the tomb is almost completely intact, with an opening flanked by two large statues of Akhenaten himself, wearing the iconic ‘double crown’ and a flail. The chamber contains some of the most beautiful and vivid wall paintings from Ancient Egypt, including scenes of Akhenaten and his family, gods and goddesses, and scenes of battle.
