The Valley of the Kings is situated on the Nile’s west bank in Luxor, Egypt. It is a necropolis where the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom were entombed from 1539 BC to 1075 BC. It contains 63 tombs and chambers, of which only about 20 are known and open to the public. The valley is located adjacent to the Valley of the Queens and the two are sometimes taken to be one complex. Despite the name, the majority of tombs are actually in the central and eastern parts of the valley, the western part of the valley is mainly devoted to temples. The largest part of the Theban Necropolis is located in the area. Many of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings are impressive works of art. Most contain scenes of deities and kings and offer a glimpse into the ancient Egyptian beliefs about life and the afterlife. Paintings depict gods of the underworld, rituals of embalming and mummification and scenes of the Pharaoh's life and conquests. The Valley of the Kings also served as a royal burial ground for the royal family. Queen Tiye, wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, is thought to be buried in the valley.
