Temple of Athena Nike In Greece: Overview,Prominent Features,History,Interesting facts
Overview:
: The Temple of Athena Nike is a temple located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The temple was dedicated to the patron Goddess of victory, Athena Nike, and was constructed around 420 BC, making it one of the earliest buildings on the Acropolis. The temple took its name from Athena Nike, the Goddess of victory, and the word Nike comes from the Greek for victory. The temple, like the rest of the Acropolis, was built on a broad platform of limestone and had four Ionic columns. The columns were of marble and were the first of their kind to have fully-sculpted capital instead of the traditional cushion-like echinus. The temple also featured other unusual stone carvings, such as a bas relief of Athena and an image of the goddess seated on or near the Acropolis’ highest point. The temple was destroyed in 480 BC during the Persian War, but was later restored by Pericles in 437 BC. Today, the ruins of the temple are still visible on the Acropolis, and it is a popular tourist destination. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Greece
Prominent Features:
The Temple of Athena Nike is an Athens-based temple that was built to celebrate the Greek Goddess Athena Nike. It is located next to the Acropolis, directly opposite the Parthenon. The temple was designed by the architect Kallikrates in the 4th century BCE and is one of the earliest Greek examples of Ionic architecture. The temple is built on a platform and consists of a single, enclosed chamber, with four columns at the entrance, each measuring 4.4 meters high. The entablature has a distinctive Ionic style, and is decorated with a frieze dedicated to Athena Nike in the form of six angled figures. The temple's cult statue, however, was destroyed by the Ottoman army in the 15th century. The temple is also historically significant as it was where Pericles celebrated the victory of the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE. History:
The Parthenon in Athens is among the most iconic of all the ancient Greek temples, and perhaps its most famous, but it was the Temple of Athena Nike that was the first to be dedicated to the goddess Athena on the Acropolis. It was built in 421 BC to commemorate a victory over the Spartans. The first Temple of Athena Nike was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC but it was reconstructed further away from the main building approximately 70 years later. The new temple, placed between two 5th-century towers, followed the shape and design of the previous monument and used some of the same material. It measured 6.32m long, 4.33m wide, and 4.89m high. The temple was small but elaborately decorated, with four Ionic columns along the portico and an inscribed frieze running along the inner walls depicting scenes of the battles against the Persians. The temple was destroyed in 1687 by the Venetians who invaded Athens in order to bombard the Ottoman Turks. Fragments of the architecture are now housed in the Acropolis Museum.
