The Temple of Azure Clouds, also known as Biyun Temple, is a Buddhist temple located in the Western Hills of Beijing, China. It was built in 1331 during the Yuan Dynasty and is one of the oldest temples in the capital. It was initially dedicated to the Amitabha Buddha but later on was used as a location for important ceremonies of the Imperial court. The temple was established in 1331, by a group of 6 monks who had been sent by the Yuan emperor, Kublai Khan. They were instructed to create a temple to honor the Amitabha Buddha, and chose a spot on a hill in the Western Hills of Beijing. On the hill, the monks built a magnificent seven-story hall, which still stands today. The temple complex included a variety of other buildings, such as libraries, lecture halls, and meditation chambers, as well as many smaller temples for other gods and Buddhas. The temple was a hub for the practice of Buddhist teachings and meditation. During the 15th century, the temple was visited by many famous Buddhist teachers, including the monk Yin Zong, who wrote many books on Buddhist philosophy and practiced meditation and chanting within the temple walls. During the early Qing dynasty, the temple was declared a “royal temple” and slad suffered significant damage as a result of the wars and unrest which followed during the 19th century.
