Worship Method:
The Huiji Temple (Mount Putuo) is one of the four sacred mountains of Buddhism in China. It is located on the island of Putuoshan, Zhejiang province. Originally a small temple built by the monk Hai Tong, it is now a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. The main worship practices of the Huiji Temple include devotional chanting, prayer and meditation. Every day, pilgrims chant mantras and sutras, pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and do intensive meditation. During main festivals, such as the annual Birth Celebration of the Great Merciful and Great Compassionate, they engage in synchronized chanting and meditation, accompanied by drums and harmonizing instruments. The Huiji Temple does not ordain monks the traditional way. Instead, it is headed by a master who is responsible for the daily worship practices. The master also leads a sangha of disciples who are engaged in practices of chanting and meditation. Group rituals, such as Pali repentance ceremonies, mantra recitation, meditation and pilgrimage are common at the temple. The temple boasts a number of dedicated, dedicated retreat centers and monasteries, located on the island of Putuo. These provide an ideal setting for those wishing to devote extended time to meditation and worship practices. Retreats may be held for weeks, months and years, and supervised by the master and other ordained monks. The Huiji Temple is also known for its sacred artworks. Statues and paintings depicting the main Buddhist figures are found throughout the temple grounds. Moreover, the temple is well known for its sacred Dharma robe, gifted by an emperor and said to be powerful enough to open the gates to enlightenment. All of these are special representations of the teachings of the Huiji Temple and are sources of spiritual wisdom. This most visited temple in China
