History:
Monte Alban, located in the central valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, is one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica. It was built between 500 BC and 250 BC by the Zapotec people, who would eventually leave their mark as an important early center of civilization in Mesoamerica. First settled by the Zapotec and Mixtec people, Monte Alban was both a political and religious center as it served as the capital of the proto-historic Oaxaca region. It flourished in its role as the center for Zapotec religious and political power while other city-states fought for control of the surrounding region. During the Classic period, Monte Alban experienced some decline but still played an important role in the lives of the local peoples. Monte Alban continued to be inhabited in the Post-classical period, though it experienced a dramatic shift away from its earlier significance as the power of the Zapotecs waned. However, the Zapotecs left their mark with the city, with monumental architecture reflecting their worldview and numerous tombs of important leaders found within the city. By the time of the Spanish conquest of Central America, Monte Alban had become a largely abandoned ruin, though some Zapotecs still inhabited the surrounding area. The Spanish were aware of the historical significance of the area and named it Mont Alban in their attempt to connect it to a nearby Christian theonomic city. Monte Alban remained largely forgotten for centuries, until it was rediscovered in the late 19th century by American and Mexican archaeologists. Since then, the city has been the subject of extensive research, with new evidence unlocking more details about the Zapotecs who inhabited it and the civilizations of Mesoamerica as a whole.
