The "Servian Wall" section of Via di Sant Anselmo in Rome, Italy, is believed to be an ancient section of the Servian Wall of Rome. This wall was first built in early 4th century BCE to defend Rome from the Etruscans; it was later rebuilt by the kings of Rome and re-enforced during the early Roman Republic. It was finally dismantled in the 4th century CE. The section of the wall that is located in Via di Sant Anselmo was built at a later date, possibly in the 5th century CE. The wall functions as a city wall and is built of large tufa blocks, reinforcing the brickwork and providing height and structure. It remains the only largely-intact section of the Servian Wall that is still visible in Rome. The section is approximately 15 m in width and features a tower on the east side (known as the Torre della Milizia). The tower is believed to have been used as an observation point for the Roman garrison. In addition to the tower, the section of the wall also includes a passageway, or porta, along the east side. It is believed that this passageway was added to the wall sometime during the Middle Ages, as the original wall did not have a porta.
