History:
The Russian State Library (RSL) is the largest library in Russia, holding nearly 42 million items in various formats. It also serves as the national library of Russia and is one of the largest libraries in the world. The Russian State Library traces its history back to the 1790s, when Catherine the Great gave the Imperial Public Library its charter. In the 19th century, it was renamed the Imperial Public Library and collected books from all over Russia. In 1933, the Imperial Public Library and other libraries in the Soviet Union were merged into what is now known as the Russian State Library. This library was managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Soviet Union until after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 1992, the library gained full independence and was renamed to the Russian State Library. The library went through a period of intense development after this time, developing an extensive collection of digital books and resources, and providing access to millions of books and articles through its online catalogs. The library also expanded its physical space, building several new complexes in the heart of Moscow, and became the central library for the Russian Federation.
