History:

Monument to the Heroes of the First World War in Moscow is a war memorial located in central Moscow, Russia, dedicated to the thousands of war deaths of the Russian forces during the First World War. The monument was built in 1924–1926 in memory of the 200 000 former Imperial Army soldiers, sailors and mariners who never returned from the battlefields of the war, and is dedicated to Japan, France and Italy as allies. The idea for a memorial to the hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens who died in World War I had been circulating since the end of the war in 1918, but the Communist Revolution that followed inhibited such initiatives. Monument construction was finally approved in 1920 by Lenin and in 1924, the new Soviet government named architect Mikhailo Mikeshin to be the chief architect for the project. Mikeshin drew up a design that incorporated a 116-meter-high high stele inspired by the types of obelisks that had been erected in ancient Egypt, together with a large central square and four additional statues representing the four allies of Russia in the war, Japan, Italy, France and Britain. The monument was built as part of the celebration of the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution and was financially supported by the government. The design was completed in the summer of 1925 and the monument was inaugurated two years later in August of 1927 and dedicated to all those who lost their lives in World War I. The stele has the names of those who died engraved around its base. The Monument to the Heroes of the First World War continues to be a focal point for memorial services, services of remembrance and patriotic events.
