History:

Luxor Temple is an ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes). The temple was founded in the New Kingdom by Amenhotep III and was dedicated to the gods Amun, Mut and Khonsu. It was added to by Rameses II and Rameses III, who further dedicated the temple to the sacred triad of gods. The complex was expanded by Alexander the Great, who erected columns in the Great Hall of the temple. Under the Ptolemaic dynasty, the temple was further embellished by Ptolemy II with obelisks and dedicatory inscriptions to the gods Amun-Re and Ptah. In Roman times, the temple was used by the Roman emperors as a court of justice and a place to receive foreign political visitors. The temple complex has several features that remain today, including the Avenue of Sphinxes, the Hypostyle Hall, the Sacred Lake and the remaining obelisks. The entrance to the temple is marked by two large granite statues of Amenhotep III, which flanks the first court of Ramesses II that was later added by Rameses III. Parts of the temple were destroyed in 1303 by a stampede of pilgrims, after which it fell into disrepair.
