History:

Gripsholmsteatern ("Theatre of the Mansion") is a theatre in Stockholm, Sweden and one of the oldest still active theatres in the world. The theatre is dedicated to theatre and performing arts and is located on a street named Hallvardsgatan in the city's suburbs. Founded in 1634, it was originally part of the ensemble of the adjacent Gripsholm Castle, which was built to protect Stockholm from invasion. The theatre has been at various times one of the most important theatres in Sweden, and it was the first theatre in the country to employ professional actors and put on professional performances. The theatre underwent multiple renovations in the 18th century, when it served as an opera and theatre house. In 1811, the theatre was extended to accommodate a larger public, and it was from then on known as the Royal Swedish Theatre (or the Royal Theatre of Gripsholm). In the 19th century, the theatre managed to attract a variety of famous performers, such as the world-renowned Swedish actress Emilie Högquist.
